October 7, 2008A different approach to preparing you for your birth
if you haven’t tried yoga before then doing so during your pregnancy will be a revolution! The use of yogic techniques can help women through their pregnancy with minimal discomfort, helping with the birth itself and beyond.
When mum’s-to-be practice yoga they generally find that they become healthier, in body, mind and outlook. The body becomes more flexible, which enables you to better adapt to various positions that you may adopt when in labour, as well as using the natural ligaments elasticity, which in turn can help to reduce pain in the labour.
Yoga helps to prepare mothers for their babies births – it encourages breath and body awareness, as we talk about the birth and labour, it helps to minimize birth concerns, teaches women to adapt to the wonderful changes that their bodies are going to go through and vitally, puts you in contact with other mums-to-be so you know that you are not alone.
In our pregnancy classes we focus on key areas such a breathing techniques, labour postures/asanas and pelvic floor exercises with a view to also helping you get back to being fighting fit after your birth! There are also relaxation and visualization techniques (yoga nidra) to help you to unwind, followed by important tea, biscuits and discussion about a wide variety of subjects all related to you and your baby.
Breathing Techniques
The breath used in yoga is known as Ujayi (u-j-i-ee) and is a breath taken in to and out of the nose. The breath is drawn slowly in to the body so can help to clam you and also relax the body, stopping you from tensing up and giving you a tool to be able to actively manage your body’s reaction. The more you can relax the body the easier your birth will be. You can learn to breathe through the pain.
Labour Postures/Asanas
During the class we use different yoga asanas to strengthen core areas of the body you may use in labour. We use specific postures to strengthen the legs and backs, postures to help open the back and chest, strengthening the arms and postures to help relieve aches and pains. All postures work towards keeping the body in tip-top condition for the birth and beyond.
Pelvic Floor Exercises
We use the breath and focus on localized muscle toning to help the pelvic floor to return to its normal state after the birth. The exercises are calming and allow the mind to focus on specific body areas, promoting body awareness.
Relaxation and Visualization Techniques (yoga nidra)
These techniques help to promote complete relaxation of the body and mind. With the use of the breath as a focus point, a visualization (or yoga nidra) can allow the mind to focus away from the discomfort of the birth and help ensure maximum the body’s natural ability to relax avoiding tensions in the muscles that could build up during labour.
What Mum’s say…
“I would like to thank you for all your help and support. The yoga really helped me to focus on the birth and I used lots of the things you have showed us especially using the ball and the breathing. The birth went really well and I managed to deliver with no pain relief as I hoped!”
Pregnancy Yoga
October 7, 2008
Yoga provides many benefits – physical, mental and emotional – that can improve the experience of pregnancy, birth and parenting. Postures and breathing practices are adapted to create greater ease and to support each stage of pregnancy. Synchronising the breath with flowing movement is enjoyable and enhances connection with the baby. Toning the muscles that support the pregnancy, as well as increasing elasticity of the birthing muscles are also benefits.
While yoga cannot guarantee a natural birth, it can help prepare you for whatever lies ahead. The postures, breathing and practices we do are excellent preparation for an active birth. Learning self-nurture (which simultaneously nurtures the baby) and turning attention inside attunes women to respond to their bodies, babies and intuition. Centring the mind and aligning the body enable one to access greater reserves of strength and replenish energies.
Practice of the postures and sequences creates gracefulness and helps the natural rhythms of the body and breathing to flow. By focusing with complete attention we can become conscious of the moment. So although pregnancy is brief, yoga gives space to savour the experience and absorb the changes. It is a precious opportunity to celebrate the wonder of life, and experience contentment with things as they are.
Relaxation is valuable and goes beyond relieving tiredness. When deep relaxation is practiced regularly balance and harmony are restored. This replenishes body, mind and spirit and allows space for healing and profound renewal.
Pregnancy yoga class also creates a forum for meeting other pregnant women, making friends and community…. lifelines for later!

Healthy Pregnancy
October 7, 2008Between 1900 and 2000, infant mortality in the United States declined by 90 percent, and maternal mortality by 99 percent. This was one of the greatest achievements of public health in the twentieth century. However, the goal, established in 1994 by the International Conference on Population and Development, of every pregnancy being healthy has not been achieved. Current efforts to ensure healthy pregnancy work at three different levels of prevention.
Primary prevention involves efforts to prevent diseases from occurring during pregnancy. Examples of primary prevention during pregnancy include family planning, preconceptional care, and health promotion during prenatal care. By preventing unintended pregnancies, family planning can prevent morbidity associated with unintended pregnancies. Preconceptional care has been shown to reduce certain birth defects. Proper nutrition and cessation of tobacco, alcohol, and drug use during pregnancy can prevent low birth weight and other complications.
Secondary prevention involves efforts to facilitate early detection and treatment of diseases during pregnancy. Prenatal care provides early and continuous assessment of the pregnant woman, and includes early detection of preeclampsia, syphilis, and tuberculosis.
Tertiary prevention attempts to avert severe complications resulting from diseases during pregnancy. Examples of tertiary prevention include the administration of antibiotics in the treatment of puerperal infection, magnesium to prevent eclampsia (convulsions) in women affected by severe preeclampsia, and transfusion of blood products when obstetrical hemorrhage occurs. Regionalization of perinatal health services, so that high-risk women deliver only in hospitals equipped to deal with potential complications, plays an important role in tertiary prevention.
Much of the improvement in maternal and infant health is attributable to improved health conditions such as better sanitation, sewage control, and safer water supplies. Continued improvement is likely to come from social and behavioral changes rather than from advancement in medical care. Such developments as the expansion in the availability of legal abortions, increased education for women, and better family planning practices have all contributed to improved maternal and infant health. It is important, therefore, for public health professionals to learn how to better address social and behavioral determinants of health. For example, because smoking cigarettes during pregnancy can cause low birth weight and prematurity, it is important to find out how to stop women from smoking during pregnancy.
Because the health of a baby is tied to health of the mother, efforts to improve pregnancy outcomes must begin with women’s health. Current efforts fall short by doing too little too late—to expect prenatal care to reverse all the cumulative effects of risk exposures over the course of a woman’s life may be expecting too much. Future efforts should promote health not only during pregnancy, but during all of a woman’s life.
